Integrity Director Anthony Ellis has completed the residential training course on Negotiation and Mediation provided by Clingendael, the Netherlands Institute of International Relations within the framework of the European Union's new training initiative for Civilian Crisis Management, ENTRi.
ENTRi is a joint effort of thirteen EU member state institutions to strengthen capacities in the provision of pre-deployment as well as specialisation courses. The main focus lies on the preparation and training of civilians either going to, or already working in, crisis management missions worldwide. Such missions include, among others, those of the European Union (EU), United Nations (UN), Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), and the African Union (AU).
The course covered key concepts such as decision-making in civilian crisis management, negotiation and mediation tools and methodologies, skills and competencies for effective negotiation and mediation, local, multilateral and cross-cultural negotiations and psychological aspects of negotiation and mediation, including profiling and active listening.
Role-plays and simulations were used to develop the skills, knowledge and competencies of participants and used the breadth and depth of their experience to reach a shared understanding of how negotiation and mediation approaches can be used most effectively. The training was facilitated and led by Wilbur Perlot, senior training and research fellow of the Clingendael European Studies Programme.
